The Audiofiles: Top 20 Songs of All Time

There’s nothing that piques my interest like a challenge – and when that challenge involves my favorite tracks of all time? Well, that’s simply music to my ears =) So, when my best friend posted about creating a list of favorites for a friend, I couldn’t help but be inspired. We exchanged a few quick IMs and I went on my merry way through the interwebs and back in time.

Even though I’m currently living as a pseudo-raver-kitten, I’ve enjoyed my fair share of classic rock, country and slow jams – it’s just been extremely few and far between as of late 😉

It only took me about an hour, and I only thought about the fact I was limited to 20 jams three or four times; I’d call that a success in itself. So, what we have here are songs that resonate in a special way with my soul. I hope y’all enjoy this trek down memory lane as much as I do =)

  1. Van Morrison – Brown Eyed Girl (Original Version)
  2. Tina Turner – Proud Mary
  3. The Juliana Theory – We´re At The Top Of The World
  4. Eric Clapton – Wonderful Tonight (Full Version)
  5. Janet Jackson – If
  6. Tracy Chapman – Fast Car
  7. Metallica – Nothing Else Matters
  8. 12 Stones – The Way I Feel
  9. Michael Jackson – Thriller
  10. K-Ci & JoJo – All My Life
  11. OutKast – B.O.B.
  12. Atmosphere – Reflections
  13. Tim McGraw – Something Like That
  14. Rascal Flatts – What Hurts The Most
  15. Whitney Houston – How Will I Know
  16. Fiona Apple – Criminal
  17. Moby – Slipping Away
  18. Depeche Mode – Soothe My Soul (Steve Angello & Jacques Lu Cont Remix)
  19. Ferry Corsten – Brainbox
  20. Chase and Status ft. Plan B ft. Rage – Fool Yourself

The Audiofiles: Bouncing Through Memorial Day Weekend

Per usual – the long weekend came and went with an amazing amount of fanfare and a complete lack of respect for the limited amount of hours in a three day time span.  Whether your time was spent marinating in relaxation or in complete play-cation mode, chances are you’re still yearning for just one more sweet day to get your life back together.  The one benefit to today’s condition is that 5pm on Friday is just so much closer; but what’s a gal to do until then? Well, relive the weekend of course!

I both kicked things off and ended things right with a few of my favorite things – my partner in crime, some picnic eats and a marathon of my ultimate TV show, Battlestar Galactica; if you’re into political, military or sci-fi drama’s this is simply a must-see series.  Check out this trailer and tell me you’re not interested; all four seasons of the reimagined series are currently on NetFlix so try it out while you still can!

Considering the amount of DJs in Chicago for EDC or in Las Vegas to enjoy the pool parties, on Saturday night we got one of the most eclectic lineups I’ve ever seen – Jack Beats, Style of Eye and Jamie Jones. Two of which I adore, the middle I still have no clue who they are.   The new Create is where the old Vanguard was – there’s essentially less tables, more LEDs and I’m so okay with that! And as a bonus, the glorious outside patio is still in tact and prefect for catching up with new and old friends alike.

Probably my favorite thing about the long weekend was the fact I had friends from all over the state coming into town for one mission: a sun & fun filled play-cation. I, for one, can definitely get down with that. Sunday morning I made the beautiful trek down to Venice Beach to grab brunch with one of my best friends from high school and her new business partner. They’re starting up a boutique Marketing firm in the SoCal area  called the Marketing Minxes – it’s an uber cute concept and I have the utmost faith in their vision.  Plus, like I really need an excuse to head out to the beach!

The only mission for the afternoon and evening was to get our collective boogie on – and thanks to some good doses of karma, we accidentally ended up at XIV, yet another SBE venue on the replacement rotation.  For any party junkies the place used to be known as Colony; it’s pretty small and intimate, especially for the ridiculous level of raging taking place there!  It was a madhouse with Co2 so thick that you couldn’t see in front of you for half a minute and the most confetti I’ve ever seen at a club.  A few minutes after walking in, we heard something trancy – and turned around and saw one of our favorite DJs – Gareth Emery! We even got to hear Concrete Angel, ahhhh – insert #trancearms here; so epic – and the perfect way to rage until the Monday light =)

Friday Fun: MDW Ready!

If there’s one thing I need to own up to at the moment, it’s that I’m a sucker for a three day weekend – and truth be told, it’s even better when everyone can join in on the fun! Sunshine, cocktails, good vibes and great friends; there’s simply nothing better!  I’m not entirely sure what my weekend plans are, but as John Lennon so eloquently phrased it: life is what happens when you’re making other plans.  The only thing that you really need to bring to the table during a weekend like this is a smile on your face and a bounce in your step.  Well, and maybe a few more things – colorful nails, the threat of a good time and an epic playlist.

Who says you need to stay with the Red-White-and-Boring trend this Memorial Day Weekend?!

I love the pop of neon colors and bling and shimmer of sparkles, so pairing them together – absolutely perfect.

No one will  ever accuse you of being unprepared to party if you carry one of these suckers around in your purse; for an even better treat, fill it with champagne, or your favorite mixed drink!

Lazy day vibes and deep house seem to go hand in hand, and for great reason – when the work goes away, your soul comes out to play! And every soul digs that soulful, and so funky, sound of deep house.

The Audiofiles: We Go Deep

For what was supposed to be a relaxing weekend, in true Amanda fashion – never a dull moment. Not like I need one – nor am I complaining – just saying, I’m exhausted and need some tunage to match my mood!  Thank goodness I’ve been collective some stellar deep house tracks over the last few weeks to keep me in a state of trance; hope y’all dig them as much as I do!

The Audiofiles: Keeping the Creative Process Alive

If you want to really hurt your parents, and you don’t have the nerve to be gay, the least you can do is go into the arts. I’m not kidding. The arts are not a way to make a living. They are a very human way of making life more bearable. Practicing an art, no matter how well or badly, is a way to make your soul grow, for heaven’s sake. Sing in the shower. Dance to the radio. Tell stories. Write a poem to a friend, even a lousy poem. Do it as well as you possibly can. You will get an enormous reward. You will have created something.”
Kurt Vonnegut, A Man Without a Country

I need to preface this post with a teensy-tinsy blanket statement – but I wholeheartedly both stand by and believe in it:

You don’t have to be artistic to be creative;
You don’t have to be creative to be artistic.

Truth be told, there’s people that fall directly in the middle of this Venn Diagram of expression – and over time one can definitely migrate from one end of the spectrum to the other – but for the most part I believe there are those of us that re-purpose the artistic constructs of others to fit our lives and there are those that build them.

Reusable Art by Nicole McGee

Being artistic can be applied to basically one field: the arts.  Dancing, singing, acting, painting, sculpting, modeling, etc, etc – they can all be made into collaborative mediums but at the end of the day, a dance is a dance and a song is a song.  The power of the creative mind is to take an artistic medium and apply what I like to call, the “fuck-it-all” method.

Here’s an example:

A painter gets his canvas and says to himself, “You know what you’re gonna do, you’re gonna paint a cityscape!” So, he grabs his trusty brushes and has it.  When the day is done it might not be a cityscape – it might be a masochistic panda, a whimsical forest or just dots on the page, but – irregardless – it’s still a painting.

The creative is the person that looks at that end result, and regardless of what it is thinks “Hey, this painting of (fill in the blank) could be a lot cooler if I broke it into pieces and assembled it back into a lamp shade.”  Bye bye old form, hello new function.  This is the essence of the creator.

As we grow older, our routines begin to present themselves and we become settled in both our way of life and school of thought – I believe the challenge we’re consistently presented with is how to both maintain the essence of the moment and, conversely, perpetually evolve ourselves.  And that answer is simple: art and creativity.

The biggest challenge the creative type faces is being pigeon-holed: we’re such free spirits that we don’t want no stinkin’ restrictions, even when it comes to a (theoretically) freeform field like the arts.  Just think about picking up an instrument – I’m sure with some coaxing, and deviations from sobriety, that one could pick up an instrument and play a basic tune, chord or scale.  No one expects to hear “Flight of the Bumblebee” but avant-garde noise, as close as some would deem it to dubstep, isn’t an actual genre.  It’s creative, sure; but art? Not exactly.

Light bulb Aquariums; what will they think of next?!

As much as we don’t want to admit it – all art tends to follow some form or function; I wouldn’t say it follows rules but it tiptoes where they deserve to be broken.  Creativity, conversely, blossoms from a world founded more on streams of consciousness and moments of inspiration than conformity.

As a community, as a culture – and even as individuals – we have a collective history creating and repurposing our art; a coat rack turns a purse holder, old CD-$’s become hanging room dividers and broken mirrors can mature into disco balls.   As different as each is to me – there are inherent similarities that one simply can’t shake: both processes require we open our minds to redefining failure.  Neither are perfect, and both are open to public – and sometimes, unpopular – debate.

The goal, for me at least, is to achieve a unique synthesis of both worlds; to fuel my passions as well as fill whatever voids I’ve created in my life.  There is nothing wrong with adding some structure to a world more reminiscent of M.C. Escher’s mind and alternatively, there’s no harm in arbitrarily throwing splatter paint on something with rigid form and bland characteristics.

[The Audiofiles] Art is What You Can Get Away With

“Nothing is original. Steal from anywhere that resonates with inspiration or fuels your imagination. Devour old films, new films, music, books, paintings, photographs, poems, dreams, random conversations, architecture, bridges, street signs, trees, clouds, bodies of water, light and shadows. Select only things to steal from that speak directly to your soul. If you do this, your work (and theft) will be authentic. Authenticity is invaluable; originality is nonexistent.”

—Jim Jarmusch

It’s said that imitation is the most sincere form of flattery – but when it comes to imitating art, do those imitations hold the same intrinsic value?  The video series below is called Everything is a Remix and it’s genius comes from the brain of Kirby Firguson.   I’ve restarted, deleted, rearranged and re-conceptualized this post a thousand times in search of the perfect pairing of words, but it’s hard to come to a head on what in the 21st century is truly considered art and what we should brush off as an amateurish imitation; or, conversely – is it possible to be both?

The fact of the matter is that we are not the sum of original thoughts or novel ideas; we’re the product of rearrangement – down to the genes we inherit from our parents.  Originality can still be reached – but we have to realize that in order to evolve, we first have to master ourselves   The problem with creativity in the 21st century is that more than ever, money becomes a factor in either gaining technology or notoriety; doubly so in the music industry

It’s not exactly news that hip-hop and pop artists have been stealing the beats from producers in the electronic community – but in today’s day and age, communities of both music camps are more connected, and vocal, than ever. Yesterday, it came to light that will.i.am has fraudulently taken the instrumentals off of several top notch EDM tracks and reused them for his own benefit – but whether it’s to accredit him as a remotely talented artist, or to bring in music sales is beyond me (though I’m sure it’s more of the later.)

The tracks in question are ‘Let’s Go‘ featuring Chris Brown, which sounds an awful lot like a drunk college DJs remix of Mat Zo and Arty’s ‘Rebound‘, and ‘Bang Bang‘ – where the drop is literally jacked  from Sandro Silva & Quintino’s ‘Epic.’ The irony of which is both songs came out around the Summer of 2011 – does he just assume that our short term memories are shot to hell?

The fact of the matter is this isn’t the first time it’s happened, nor will it be the last time.  Back in 2011, ironically around the time when both jams in question were released – Avicii and Leona Lewis had a similar feud concerning the track ‘Collide.’ If you want to reach back even further, Hip Hop artists and Rappers have been entertaining this methodology for years with their mixtapes – you know that you’re made it if your beat’s continually being sampled.  A friend of mine put it best this morning: Did the world hate Biggie for producing Juicy?

At the end of the day, this is my main issue:  that the true artistic talent in the world will never be recognized because people in better paid positions will always be there to reap the rewards.  On the flip side, there’s some notoriety in getting your music jacked for Top 40 listening pleasure:  any press is essentially good press, and with the monetary settlement that I’m sure will shortly follow – these artists should be getting a pretty penny for frustrations but some notoriety within the pop music community as well.

The Audiofiles: The Post-Miami/WMC/UMF Rx

After being in the Electronic Dance scene for the better part of the last decade, I have one small confession to make: though we get epic onslaughts of DJs, Festivals and all night dance-a-thons in Los Angeles, there’s just something about going to Miami for Winter Music Conference and Ultra that I just have to do.  I’ve had friends go for the past three years and tell me that it was the time of their life – problem is, living in LA, the mecca of most things EDM in America it’s incredibly hard to justify spending all that money for a weekend in Miami.  But, One of my best friends went with her boyfriend and I had the pleasure of living vicariously through them and their friends all weekend; and I have to say, I’m insanely jealous!  Now that I’ve gone through the live streams, the sets, the Instagram feeds and through Facebook I feel the need to take part in this epic debauchery; thank goodness there’s always next year!

There are a few great blogs that capture the moment and the music of festivals in an A+ fashion – specifically, Dancing Astronaut – and they definitely didn’t disappoint when it came to Miami Music Week – here are some of my favorite sets from this past weekend; they’re doing a proper job of getting me through my day so hopefully they’ll do the same for y’all.

Enjoy! ♥

P.S. Looks like dates are already set for Ultra next year – March 28-30; you can bet your bottom bassline I’ll be thre!
