[The Audiofiles] A Funk Soul Revival with The Opiuo Band at the El Rey on 6/26

Thanks to the accessibility of technology and the combined outpouring of new talent, the music industry is constantly propelling itself forward while attempting to remain true to it’s natural roots.  Within the first half of this decade, I’ve seen a complete resurgence of live instrumentation alongside electronic productions.  Across the genres and between artists like EOTO to Chase and Status, Pretty Lights to Russ Liquid and Late Night Radio, Griz and Gramatik – there are hints of jazz and slam poetry; the livetronica movement is gaining momentum and jam bands are no longer a thing of the past. There is a strong squad of current producers that are as progressive as they are regressive; combining the modern want of whomp and bass coursing through our veins like electricity, while our minds warp around succulent synths, harmonic chord progressions and ethereal melodies.

Starting with Sea of Dreams and the Gem and Jam Festival, I’ve been blessed to be front and center from phenomenal live performances this year; so going into Lightning in a Bottle, my hopes were sky high that I’d get my mind blown as I went on a five day, extrasensory adventure. Boy, was I ever right! I’d only listened to Opiuo a handful of times before LIB, but each time – their energetic, pulsing rhythm, sultry vocals and whimsical melodies wafted through my world with delirious tones and I kept wanting more.  I was finally getting to witness their genius live, and with a live band? Day made and they did not disappoint.

Part funk, part soul, and all the way groovy, Opiou makes the beats that makes everyone want to move their feet; his music defies generation gaps and you could easily pin him for twenty years too early for his time, or twenty years to late, but I’d like to think of him as right on time.  Hailing from New Zealand, Opiuo is the definition of musical genius. Since LIB, I’ve no kidding put probably 200 plays on this Soundcloud playlist they put together for Montreal’s Frank & Oak; if this can’t get you in the mood – nothing will!

On Friday, June 26 The Opiuo Band will get the El Rey Theatre movin’ and groovin’ with their delectable wobbles and body moving melodies.  Doors open at 8pm, let the good vibes roll!  If you can’t make the LA date, don’t fret – they’ll be cruising through the United States until then.

[LA Life] CERB and A Taste of Eagle Rock

aTofERock-260

Do you ever feel like your entire life is one giant sign? Anxieties, troubles and tribulations tend to occur for me when I don’t pay attention to the motion of internal tides.

A few weeks before Danny and I left for Lightning in a Bottle, we haphazardly stumbled across one of the cutest sights I’d ever seen in the middle of Eagle Rock. We were on our Sunday stroll through the neighborhood, and for the past few weeks we’d talked about the strange and almost human-like mannequin in the middle of the road.  Approaching from the other side, we finally made out a sign – a sign for Know Reality Pie. We took one long look at the pie truck, parked delicately next to open grass and a pop-up cafe, and then nodded in agreement: this was it.

As we settled into our triple berry and richly flavored apple pies, we noticed that each and every person coming in was in some way, shape or form a young professional and we felt naturally compelled to strike up a conversation with all of them. From Kelly behind the counter pouring us morning mimosas, or the procession of puppies that galloped into and around us, we were enamored in conversation and instantly felt an urge to be something more within the community.  Slowly delighting our fresh drinks, we met a lovely lady named Sarah with a refreshing demeanor.  After a few minutes of talking about our start in the neighborhood, photography, social media and festivals, she got to telling us about Collaborative Eagle Rock Beautiful.  They’re a local, non-profit volunteer organization that focuses on creating a more sustainable environment within their community and as it turns out, they’re the ones responsible for the large, local push towards the reintegration of succulents and California landscaping around Eagle Rock that I’ve been enamored with.  They were about to host a CGhrc6OUgAEX0V3weekend event they were calling ‘A Taste of Eagle Rock’, featuring dozens of our fantastic local food joints, some local drinks and – hopefully – a great turnout from the town; they were looking for an event photographer, and it just so happened – I was engaged to one!  After we exchanged laughs and business cards, and enjoyed another drink or two, Danny and started on our way home and looked at each other with excitement coursing through our veins.  This is something we’ve been wanting for so long, and now – we were about to get it!

With things like Lightning in a Bottle around the corner and my lack of actual time to manage,  I’d only been in touch here and there.  But after Lightning in a Bottle (which I cannot wait to dish on!), curiosity caught the cat, and I asked how I could really help.  I inquired about their social media presence and as my luck has it – that’s exactly what they needed.  On top of the five accounts already in my Tweetdeck, it wasn’t exactly absurd to add just one more!

Sunday was the day, and let’s be honest – we didn’t get cold feet per-say – but they were at least lukewarm.  It was a stunning day out, and before the June Gloom and awkward midday showers started; bright, crystal blue skies sent down succulent rays of sunlight as we approached our final destination. We’d managed to meander to an area of the neighborhood that we frequently stroll through, camera in hand and a bounce in our step – the houses are sweeping, with plush yards encompassing them like moats. “This is where we’re going…?!” we both mused.

aTofERock-112  11425760_1622127488033916_4590727028852316586_o
Winding around the house were tables and EZ-ups, with pile upon pile of delicious, local eats and treats.  From Milkfarm and Public House Eagle Rock – two of the latest establishments to cruise onto Colorado Blvd – out the traditional grubberies Little Beast, Max City BBQ, Capri, Four Cafe, Spitz, Dave’s Grillin and Chillin’ and the delectable Caramia Gelato stand up to the national spots like Chipotle, Trader Joe’s and Jamba Juice, everyone was there and doling out their Sunday best.  We even got to do some Cider and Wine tasting thanks to Cider House 101!  Within the first 45 minutes over 200 people had shown up to grub down and chill out, and the property was a buzz with warm energy.

We showed up dazed, slightly confused, knowing only one person and absolutely hungry – we left with full bellies, happy hearts and a hope to really do some good within the community. There were so many familiar faces, from weekly walks and random restaurant romps.  Even though we didn’t make any new best friends – we feel committed to the mission of CERB and are beyond excited to be part of future endeavors. And I’m excited to say that I’ll be stepping into a bigger role, but for now – I’ll just be doing their social media 🙂

[Self Discovery] Time Management and Expressing Priorities Through Action

The irony in trying to write this….is I actually don’t have the time to write it. I want to have time to write it, inevitably, it happened; mostly due to the ideas that start flowing out of my body like a cold sweat because of my internal anxiety.  Over the course of my life, I’ve discovered that if there’s one thing I need to do every single day – it isn’t showering and it damn near isn’t working out, but if I don’t exhibit some form of mental dexterity throughout the day – whether that’s my literal job at hand, or my life path in universe – I feel like I haven’t done my job as a person  I haven’t been peopleing.  Most of the time, it’s some form of reading and writing; either letting my innermost thoughts and wildest emotions run rampant through my veins, out my fingers and into binary code or ingesting tactile worlds that taste like wanderlust and leave me breathless. But I digress, because I don’t have time to go down that path.
Time is one of the most important and intangible things in the world; especially when you understand that the concept of time is a manmade construct, a measurement to feel more in touch with the ebb and flow of the external world and at peace with the universe inside you.  The past, the future – they’re both irrelevant, because we can only inhabit the present moment.  So when I talk about “Time Management”, I’m actually referring to managing the present moment.
The easiest question to then ask, is what are you choosing to be front, center and present for – and what areas of your life are you just waltzing through robotically, almost like you’re your own understudy?  Once you figure out what you truly want to be passionately pursuing, you proverbially trim off unnecessary ‘time-fat’ and all the sudden, you’re left with a hearty stake in yourself.
First, repeat after me: I cannot do everything and be everywhere; If I am everywhere, then I am nowhere, if I’m doing everything – I am not doing me.  Now, As a quick exercise, grab a piece of scratch paper (because it feels good to physically hold onto an idea), time yourself for 60 seconds, and quickly write down every small picture idea or thing you ideally could accomplish in a day; next, think a little bigger to what you want to do every week; now, a month – and finally, a year. You’ll notice common trends, and maybe a few standout things that you keep kicking yourself for not doing or that you’re proud you’re a part of.
My trends start with writing, reading, fitness, learning about social media strategy, discovering new music, making jewelry and other new hobbies when I’m looking at my small picture – but the second I move to my year projection, I realize all of the larger, umbrella plans: saving up money to travel overseas (which means, working more), catalyzing my identity within the music industry (which also means, working more), having a bigger footprint in both my community and neighborhood (which means a more open schedule on weekends while being home more), not to mention amassing vast quantities of knowledge like new languages or progressive science classes that one needs to devote a lot of time to (meaning I’d need to insert maybe 10 more hours in my week).

Last, but certainly not least, there’s the special relationships in my life – including the one I have with myself, as well as my romantic relationship with my fiancé.  Combined, I lived by myself for a mostly glorious, sometimes tulmultuous, three years on and off and through it all I became my own best friend.  The first relationship you should prioritize in your life is the one you have with yourself; and you’ll soon find that the others fall in line.  By prioritizing yourself, you’ll meet other strong willed, like minded people who can’t be bothered with trivialities and truly invest in the people they’re around.

So, on one hand – I want to do everything that has nothing to do with work; on the other, to get to where I want to be in life, it looks like work is where I need to center my presence.  It might be the two job thing….or three job thing when you consider I’m still the Director of Social Media for The DJ List.  I discovered that if I don’t write about 500 words a day, I legitimately feel like I’m going crazy – the same goes for getting a good dose of cardio in every other day; I’m simply a happier person for doing it.

I’ve wanted to write this post for a week, but honestly just haven’t found the time.  I’m sure it’s existed, somewhere between cuddling with my fiancé  and cuddling with the new kitten, I could’ve slipped into it before driving to Marina del Rey for work or coming home from downtown LA, maybe even jotted down some notes when I was writing copy for The DJ List or drafting up a press release for the Lucent Dossier experience, maybe I didn’t need to go to sleep so early the other night or sleep in so much, but it’s been a long hard road home since LIB and the recovery seems everlasting.  I even thought about not writing, because I didn’t have the time.  And then, I did want to write it, even though I still didn’t have the time.  Because 1,000 words later I’m happier, I see the world clearer, and I feel lighter – like I’ve been tumbled in the dryer with fabric softener.

The truth of the matter is, telling someone else how to manage their time better is like telling someone in California how to prepare for a blizzard.  It’s useful, until you have to do it. What I’ve actually discovered is that to manage your time efficiently you have to express your priorities through your actions.  Hopefully, you’ve learned a thing or two as well!  Now it’s your turn – what are your best tips on time management?

[The Audiofiles] Losing a Laptop and Facing the Music

bassnectar

I should preface this by saying this is not the recap article I was planning on writing. When we had the opportunity to cover Lightning in a Bottle for the second year in a row, Danny and I didn’t even have to bat an eye before conferring on an answer. Yes, yes, unequivocally yes.  Since the time I heard of Lightning in a Bottle several years ago, I knew deep down in my heart that there was something so intrinsically special and important about this festival.  Our lives, our friendships and our relationship all revolve around live music.  From concerts and clubs to raves and multi day music festivals, we eat, sleep and breathe music and dance like every cell in our body is affected.  It’s something that we can both experience individually, communally and romantically all within the same moment.

Two years ago, we said ‘I Love You’ for the first time at Lightning in a Bottle.  Last year, we conquered our first major festival as contributors to The DJ List and this year, we were back for the third time – for him, to cover the festival as a photographer for The DJ List and for myself, working on the Press Team with The Confluence – one of the hardest working, boutique PR firms on the West Coast.

eoto

We had an amazing weekend and met dozens of warm hearted, life loving, amazing individuals.  Unfortunately, those memories are now marred.  On Monday morning while we were packing, we noticed that things weren’t right.  First, we noticed that our 13″ Apple MacBook Air was stolen.  Then, we realized that other trivial things like an Apple Lightning Cord + Phone Charger were gone…and so was our favorite pillow. After putting 2 and 2 together to make 4, we’ve come to the conclusion that we’d been watched all weekend.  The two of us had gone back and forth to the tent from the Press Area with our gear several times, and over the course of the week – someone must have been watching.  We weren’t just robbed, we were targeted.  They didn’t just take from us, we were violated. And, this isn’t just a laptop – this is Danny’s photo laptop.

russ

This is where he’s edited pics from Lucent Dossier, HARD Day of the Dead, Gem and Jam Festival (one of which was featured in the Huffington Post!), Desert Hearts and Sea of Dreams; not to mention, artists like EOTO, Russ Liquid, Paper Diamond, Dreamlyfe, Seven Lions, Bassnectar, Krewella, Cosmic Gate, Armin van Buuren, Markus Schulz, Zion I, G Jones, RL Grime and so much more.  He’s also working as a live theater photographer and has deliverables to turn in weekly.  The stolen laptop is more than an inconvenience, it’s a monetary drain and is putting his work – his AMAZING work – on hold.

gemjam

What’s personally disappointing is that this is billed as a transformational festival; this is a supposedly safe place where we can be free, vulnerable and open – with our hearts, our homes, our minds and our belongings.  The fact of the matter is that this could’ve happened to anyone – but it happened to us; just because we had to learn a difficult lesson, doesn’t mean you need to learn one yourself. We’ve thought of a few tips and tricks for you guys so regardless of if you’re a photographer, videographer or simple a festival freak who enjoys enjoying themselves – take some notes, be safe and let’s make sure we keep our ever evolving community in check.

  •  Apply for Car Camping!  When your car’s locked, it’s just a giant lock box.  If you can manage to keep your car next to your campsite, you’ll be set the entire weekend.
  •  If Car Camping isn’t available, see if you can get back to your car easily every night to put things in a safe place.
  •  Check with the Press Team and see if Lockers are available.  Bring your own lock.
  •  Minimize expensive equipment.  You don’t need your entire closet of cables, computers and camera gear – just bring your bare necessities.
  •  Always close your tent completely; lock it if you have a lock
  •  Never rush through camp – make sure you cover your equipment and retrace your steps.
  •  Keep your gear on your person as much as possible
  •  Back up your data on a portable hard drive or on the cloud
  •  Download ‘Find My Phone’ to keep tabs on your gear
  •  Stay sober-ish.  I’m not saying have fun, but an inebriated mind isn’t the best judge of character or equipment safety.

All of the pictures used in this post wouldn’t have been possible without the gear we’ve had, and I’m crossing my fingers that we don’t have to miss amazing opportunities and coverage because someone decided to be selfish and horrible.

With the immense amount of support I’ve gotten – my friends have told me to make a Go Fund Me page – so here we are.

–> Go Fund Me: Let’s Replace Danny’s Laptop <–

If you’d like to donate, even if it’s only $5 – anything helps! I don’t care if we make all of the money back for a new computer, I don’t even care if we only make half – I just want us to continue doing what we love doing, because covering live music and being part of this community is something that both of us are so passionate about.

[Self Discovery] Seven Paths to Successful Stress Relief

“If you are depressed you are living in the past.
If you are anxious you are living in the future.
If you are at peace you are living in the present.”
Lao Tzu
Some days, I feel calm and collected – almost like I rolled into the right side of the world, where stop lights shift in synchronicity while birds chirp in time.  Other days, which as of late have been more and more frequent, I seem to wake up wired for awkwardness at every turn. A misstep here, can’t find my flip flops there, where did I ever misplace my keys – laptop – headphones – charger – brain, how did I end up on this side of town.  Let’s be honest, those last few can become a never-ending, choose your misadventure tale where I invariably end up with a good story but never a dull moment.  But, isn’t that the point of life: to smell roses on walkways that you’d never intended to be on.

My step-mom always said ‘Everything in it’s place and a place for everything’ – but I don’t think she was speaking to my mental faculties.  You know those friends that keep a ridiculous amount of tabs open on their web browser?  That’s basically what the inside of my brain feels like on the daily.  Lists for this, that and the other thing; and potentially even a list of lists I need to make which is usually followed by a general onslaught of compounded, potentially circular, curiosities.

It might not frequent you as often as it frequents me, but stress has invariably become a part of my everyday routine. I’ll be the first to admit that most of it is self sustained, which walks that thin line between stress and anxiety.  Whether it’s stress that I’m underperforming at work, or not pulling my weight in a friendship, the fear of fumbling at the most basic of tasks, not spending time with the right people and not focusing on the right passions and pursuits – let me tell you, my mind flips on it’s head nearly a thousand times a day.

Just because stress exists in the periphery of your life (and trust me, it will!), there’s no need to internalize it!  Often referred to as the ‘silent killer‘, people who mismanage their stress levels can suffer from crippling complications that go far beyond social scenarios. Stomach problems like ulcers, illness, raised blood pressure, cluster headaches, insomnia and depression are all indicators that your cortisol levels are through the roof. Sometimes you’re the bug, and sometimes you’re the windshield – but I want you to be the 409 that cleans up the mess and makes it crystal clear for the driver; namely: you. So, when life gives you lemons, find a friend with vodka and have a drink.  And then read these surefire stress tips, set to calm your nerves and soothe your shaken and stirred soul.

Meditation

I didn’t fully grasp the power of meditation until I ventured out to Arkansas for a work trip a few years ago.  Yes, you heard me right – I was in Arkansas, but not voluntarily.  If you’re wondering what’s out there, not a whole hell of a lot besides Wal Mart headquarters in Bentonville and the Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art.  I’ll let you guess which one I was forced to go to and which one I volunteered to see; but the end result is I saw my first Warhol and Rockwell paintings in person, and for a week straight I was deadpan sober.  Now, let me say that there’s nothing wrong with being sober – but I was in the mood for a head change, and meditation offered just that at a fraction of the cost of a hotel bar drink. And to boot, the change lasts longer and is by and large much more beneficial to your health.  Through meditation, the rest of the world melts away while you’re left in the purity of the moment, the chaos around you clamoring while your mind stays at ease.

For meditation newbies, every few months, Depak Chopra offers a new, 21 day free meditation course through his website, focusing on a core emotional tenant – love, career, family, relationships, etc.  Delicately, you’re guided down a pleasant path towards relaxing your mind and focusing on your intentions.  Sure, you don’t need someone to tell you breathe in and out while focusing on your heart beat in an unstated but wholly felt rhythm – but it definitely helps.  Soon enough, you’ll find you can tune out the world on your own as you slip into sweet, meditative bliss.

Pets

There’s a saying around my house – If you’re having a bad day, grab a cat! – but this goes far beyond your preference for feline friends and K-9 companions.  Cats and dogs have a proven ability to boost the immune system by lower blood pressure, heart rate and cortisol level. Cortisol is a hormone your body excretes when it is in duress.  Meaning, lower cortisol levels lead to lower stress levels and all around better vibes – increasing your general happiness and sense of well being.

The idea of caring for another creature curates an instinctual sense of altruism. If you’re looking to get active, having a dog in your life will get you outside for daily walks and into dog parks where you can meet like-minded individuals – and potentially even snag a date! Cats, while not being as inherently social, have a novel scientific affect on the human body – the cat’s purr resonates with a natural healing vibration. Cat’s purr at a range of 27 Hz to 50 Hz; the Root Chakra is effected by vibrations between 20 and 60 Hz while a vibration at 25 Hz stimulates the growth of mitochondria.  a vibration at 32 Hz is pleasant on the nervous system while a vibration at 45 Hz has been proven to regenerate bone growth!

Exercise

For anyone who grew up in the 90’s, you have to remember this scene from Legally Blonde.  And let’s hand it to the gal, Reese has an excellent point – Exercise does give you a boost of endorphins. One thing that’s tried and true: these neurotransmitters are proven to elevate your mood while they kick stress to the curb by simulating the effect of an opiate like morphine or codine.  Good news for you – you can get high on your own supply; literally!

Go for a jog, get out and shake your groove thing at the club, meet up with some friends and get your yoga on in the park.  Take a walk around the neighborhood and fully immerse yourself within your community.  Websites like Meetup.com are amazing for curating small groups of like minded individuals.

Retail Therapy

You might be sitting here saying ‘…but money can’t buy me happiness…’ – but it can buy you a new pair of shoes, that shiny new gadget you’ve been eyeing or a stellar new hair-do.  Truth be told, when I’ve felt down and out – a few minutes of online shopping while ruffling through my favorite stores on ETSY seems to absolutely do the trick of turning my frown upside down.  Now, everything in moderation (..including moderation): you don’t need to go bonkers and buy the whole store or get an incredible luxury item that doesn’t fit your lifestyle.  But a lovely trinket here and there to remind yourself that you’re lovely and loved surely can’t hurt!

Comfort Food

How many times have you heard the phrase “Food is the way to my heart…” – but did you know how much validity it held? The simple fact of the matter is that over 90% of your body’s serotonin receptors sit in your digestive tract.  When you’re stressed, you just don’t eat as well – and being malnourished plays a huge factor in mood!  The next time you feel like you’re not eating your feelings, just remember that a few bites of excellent food might be all you need to go from a zero to a hero.

Expand Your Horizons

You don’t need to paint or make music to be considered creative, crafty or artsy; it’s 2015 and there are hundreds of ways that you can purge your inner emotions and use them as a creative catalyst for something greater.  Head on down to Michael’s, JoAnne Fabrics or your local Arts and Crafts haunt and roam the aisles in search of your new muse.  There’s an infinite amount of endeavors to try your hands at – from making jewelry and candles, to wood work or planting your own herb garden.  The best part for at the end of the day you’ve created a unique and share-able masterpiece that’s all yours!  Now, that’s something worth getting excited about

Last, but certainly not least – just reach out and touch someone!

Hugs are my favorite form of currency, because by giving one – you’re automatically giving one!  A perfect 1:1 ratio if you ask me.  By in large, human contact is one of the best ways to irradiate the blues – whether it’s a friend that you’re comfortable sitting in silence and doing nothing with, or your crew’s Chatty Cathy, chances are the simple effect of another sympathetic ear will help boost you back into happiness.  And the hug?  Well, as it turns out a good 20 second hugs reduce the amount of cortisol in your system by feeding your body oxytocin – commonly referred to as the ‘cuddle’ hormone – and stimulating your brain to reduce dopamine, known as the ‘pleasure hormone’.

What’s your favorite way to kick the stress of everyday life?

Let me know in the comments below!
