Doing It Right: Veni, Vidi, Vegas!

There’s nothing quite as fun – or draining – as spending a weekend in Las Vegas.  The first night is the most exciting, and probably the most debauchery….and each day when you wake up the glitz and glimmer of the city fades a bit more until your hangover takes over – and then it’s time to force feed yourself some reality and get back to that life you lead Monday through Friday.

I was lucky enough to be in great company the entire time; it was one of my closest gal’s Bachelorette weekends and we were all in the mood to get down!  We stayed at the Vdara Hotel & Spa and were not disappointed: as a non-gambler I was stoked there weren’t any machines or tables within the hotel.

We started the weekend off right with a deliciously expensive meal at TAO – well worth it, but getting only one piece of sushi for the typical price of two is simply not the business.

After dinner, we were whisked away to their nightclub for some overhyped Top 40 DJ; didn’t take us long to bounce out but thanks for the free drinks!

I should have prefaced this by saying that us ladies are more of the rough and tumble type than we are damsels in distress, so it didn’t take long for us to collectively say “Fuck that!” and change into manageable stomping attire.

Saying the next morning was rough might be the understatement of the month – but somehow we rallied and got down with our bad selves one more time; this time with the help of Doc Martin, DJ Sneak and Body English at the Hard Rock!

Doing it Right: San Diego’s Museum of Natural History

Most people develop their New Years Resolutions by the time January rolls around; then they’re on top of them, up and at’em and crossing things off their lists.  I have a less manicured, equally pragmatic approach to resolutions – whereas mine typically come to me as the year rolls on.  So far this year, we have not buying packs of cigarettes, walking to the gym instead of driving and now I have another to add to the list: I want to go to one new museum a month!  Last month, I adventured out to the Getty Villa in Malibu to soak up some gorgeous rays and it set a wonderful tone for the day.  I was surrounded by wonderful company and timeless works of art; and I wanted more!  So, while I was down in San Diego last weekend my friends and I stopped by Balboa Park to take in the cacophony of museums. We finally settled on the Museum of Natural History – and it was a good call…between their Chocolate Exhibit and an Ansel Adams-esque Photography expose, we definitely got our fill of culture for the day.

Gorgeous, Southern California weather…

Gorgeous flowers from the Botanical Garden

Chocolate!! How could we resist?!

That’s a whole lotta chocolate!

The end of our adventure; until the next one!

Play: San Diego, Round 2

There comes a time in everyone’s work routine when they just need a break from the monotony; for example, my coworkers – whose kids happen to be closer to my age than I am to theirs – go on week long vacations, stomping down that PTO cap several times a year.  But then there’s me…little Miss “My-PTO’s-Been-At-Capacity-For-Six-Months”…who couldn’t seem to find any appropriate reason to take time off of work.  Sure, I’ve taken time off for Coachella, Hard Summer and EDC – but it’s been a while since I’ve felt I deserved a mini-vacation, especially considering I work from home half the time – that’s almost vacation enough from the monotony of the work week.  Well, thank goodness that all changed last Friday!  One of my close girl friends and I took the day off of work and moseyed our way on down to beautiful San Diego.  We had some delicious meals, which included one of the best Bloody Mary’s I’ve ever nommed on, and took ourselves on a little sightseeing at Balboa Park – here are some of my favorite snaps of the weekend; enjoy!

Let the vacation begin!

Doing it Right: Porter Robinson’s Circle Assembly Tour

Over the last few years, I’ve developed a major crush on Electronic Music – from Trance to Electro House, from Industrial Tech House to Dubstep, and from Drum & Bass to Trap, I basically love it all.   And it’s no wonder, there are elements of electronic music oozing from every other genre.  The “Dubstep” of 2013 sounds eerily similar to the hard rock sounds of Atreyu, Avenged Sevenfold, System of a Down and Korn and “Trap” music is nothing more than hard Rap and Hip Hop beats sans the obnoxious “Money, Hoes and Drugs” vocals.

Each of Saturday’s acts is respected within their own right, as well as their own cross-genre productions.  If you made me drop a pin on the EDM map for Penguin Prison, Seven Lions or Porter Robinson I simply couldn’t do it; each act boasts a mature sound and is beyond versatile.  To be honest, I’d either essentially forgotten or literally had no idea that PP was the opening act – it wasn’t until much later that I put 2 and 2 together to get 4; there were gorgeous vocals coming straight from the DJs mouth, which we were all highly astounded by, a Indie-electro sound and beats that made you just bop around the dance floor – he was the perfect opening act.

Next up was Santa Barbara native Seven Lions – the best way to describe his sound is Trancestep. By weaving beautiful, harmonious dissonance and booming basslines, he creates a unique sound that I’ve only heard from the likes of  Blackmill, on the more relaxed “Chill-step” end of the spectrum, and Xilent, who sits on the harder hitting Dubstep and Drum & Bass side of things. Seven Lions played literally one of the best set’s I’ve heard in the last few years, let alone one of the best ‘Dubstep’ sets ever.  He gets down with the crowd and his energy is contagious, the only other performer I could even compare him to with sound and style would be Bassnectar – and that’s an amazing compliment to both artists in my opinion.

Seven Lions @ The Hollywood Palladium

Last, but by no means least: there’s mister Porter Robinson himself.  After the astounding set by Seven Lions I wasn’t expecting to get swept off my feet: boy was I wrong! He started off the set with his hit ‘Seconds’ and then continued, hit after hit, to wow, astound and hype the crowd.  There was a perma-smile on my face the entire time he was spinning and my feet could not stop moving to his beats.  The Circle Assembly Tour is a must for any self-professed EDM lover; if I could, I would go back in a heartbeat!

Doing It Right: My Lucky Date With Blue Medi Spa

Some people seem to have all the luck – raffles, clothes, apartments, friends; every bit and piece of their lives seem all too perfect to be real.  I’m definitely not one of those people but believe you me: I’ve had my fair share of luck.  Over the last three years I’ve been blessed with multiple opportunities that simply make my soul happy:  I was lucky enough to visit one of my best friends in Shanghai last year and got to celebrate the Chinese New Years in style, I won a trip to Las Vegas through the good folks at Metrowize and I was privileged enough to not only worth the Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week in Los Angeles, but I got to interview top notch designers like Christian Audigier and Lana Fuchs!

Over the last year or so, there’s been little luck to be found – which doesn’t bother me much, I definitely felt like I’d used up all my karma points with the universe! Well, a huge thank you to Blue Medi Spa of Sherman Oaks and Yelp’s LA East Elite Team for changing things up a bit – after attending the kickoff event for Yelp Elite’s last week, I got a strange phone call the next day saying that my raffle ticket had won me a night of pampering and a goodie bag. I’d just finished a big workout and literally had to pause and catch my breath -in between descriptions of spa treatments, I managed to squeak the words “…wait, I won?!” into the receiver.  And a week and a few treatments later, I still can’t believe how lucky I was!

First things first, the staff is beyond lovely – they were ready and able to answer all of my varied questions, and are over the moon hospitable! After a quick and nifty iPad driven intake form, I was swept away by a technician named Stacey for some microderabrasion or as the folks at Blue Spa refer to it – MicrodermaBlue.  Using the DiamondTome technology, the skin is exfoliated by distributing a stream of fine crystals and diamonds and then using a vacuum to suction the crystals – and your dead skin – up, up and away. The end result for me were that the top few layers of dead skin were completely removed, leaving a beautifully smooth surface with very little blemishes and an even complexion.  Another perk to microdermabrasion, besides your skin feeling heavenly, is that makeup will apply easier: it won’t streak and you won’t need to touch it up at all! The service itself is roughly $150, but in my opinion it’s completely worth every penny (that I didn’t have to pay…)

One thing that I didn’t take into account before my appointment is your skin has multiple layers: the microdermabrasion targeted the epidermis, or the top layer of the skin.  My next treatment, Laser Genesis, targeting the endodermis (bottom layer of skin).   Now, let me preface this section by saying that this is a pretty pricey treatment ($400 for just your face) and there’s no way I would do this on my own dime – but – I absolutely loved it and feel that if you can afford a treatment like this, do it. The microdermabrasion opened up my pores for the removal of dirt and dead skin and the Laser Genesis then goes in and minimizes them.  It takes roughly 30 minutes, and 13 thousand light pulses, to finish your face – and not gonna lie, it feels a little strange.  The light pulses hit your face in attempts to stimulate collagen growth; and as a warning: the light pulses feel very similar to being in a strong tanning bed and can be a little uncomfortable at times.  The end result was that my skin tone and texture were completely evened out, and my cat scratches that I’ve had for years were almost unnoticeable!

Last, but definitely not least, I was presented with a goodie bag filled to the brim with amazing products which includes, but is totally not limited to, a Latisse kit ($120) with a one month supply of applicators and top of the line sunscreen + skin moisturizer from Fenix ($55) to ensure the treatments last.

Once again, a huge thank you to Blue Medi Spa and Yelp for making this girl feel so special; thank you, thank you, thank you! My face looks and feels wonderful and I couldn’t be happier

Doing it Right: Slow Sundays at the Getty Villa

Yesterday, a few friends and I went on quite the glorious adventure – the weather had just cleared up in Southern California and we were off to the J Paul Getty Museum out in Malibu!

From the second we arrived, we were in absolute awe – the grounds were majestically adorned in Greco-Roman architecture and sculptures; from the fountains and statues, down to the marble and stone each room was built with.  The best thing about our day-venture to the Villa was that beyond the $15 for parking, all we had to do was make a reservation and the occasion was absolutely free; as all good art should be, in my opinion.  We spent about three hours wandering through every room, letting our breath be taken away by the intrinsic beauty, intricate details and color schemes of ancient times.

As amazing as they are, please note that these pictures do not do the works of art or grounds of the Villa any justice – if you’re ever in the area, I highly suggest you check it out for yourself!
