[Doing it Right] San Francisco, the City of Dreams

This past weekend I took the love of my life up to my favorite city for a weekend full of eats, drinks, adventures and my favorite people.  We spent a few days in the city with my family soaking in the beautiful and breezy weather, exploring the Farmer’s Market at the Ferry Building, graffiti in the Mission, epic views from both Bernal Heights Hills and Twin Peaks and last – but definitely not least – and enjoying the Exploratirum and Pier 14 with a few of our close friends.  On Monday, we took to the city just the two of us to see what trouble we could get into.  Below are some of my absolute favorite moments of the weekend but even the pictures can’t do it justice; it was absolutely perfect and I’m more in love than I ever thought possible!

My step-mom just got back from Cuba; and gifted me with these!!

[Doing it Right] SHARKNADO in San Diego

What happens when you combine 16 close friends, one condo in San Diego, copious amounts of shenanigans, amazing weather and good music? Well, some might call it a dream, others might refer to it as ridiculous – but for all intensive purposes, we’re choosing to refer to it as Sharknado 2013.   On Saturday, we set our sights on the ocean and never looked back – traveling the high seas like a group of rowdy pirates with our drinks and our two step.  Our hostess with the mostess recruited a bartender to serve us tasty beverages as we raged our way through the day and we brought assorted snacks to keep us healthy and happy.  Plus – throughout the weekend we all lent a hand in the kitchen which saved us an epic amount of money.  We assembled the meals by predetermined teams for the party and the end result was we all had the chance to contribute something equally delicious and awesome to the group. Sunday things culminated with an epic build your own Bloody Mary session, relaxed beats and some quality time poolside in the stunning San Diego sunshine.  Per usual, I’ll be reveling in these memories for a while as I sit here, waiting patiently for my next adventure.

The Gang

Of course, I couldn’t leave y’all without giving you something to groove to on this manic Monday so here’s a little dose of the music we were bumping over the past weekend – from dubstep to deep house, we found a place for it all and I hope you guys can find a way to do that, too!

[This Is Growing Up] So You’re Looking To Relocate?

There’s very little in life that’s equally exciting and daunting as dating in Los Angeles, but apartment hunting in the city of Angels most definitely comes in at a close second.  I moved down from Santa Barbara in the Summer of ’08 and instead of putting in the effort to look for the best fit, I chose to negate crucial steps and was left wanting instead of feeling like I was home.  Over the five years I’ve been here, I’ve moved twice and each time has been a unique learning experiences.

Prime example: I’ve learned the hard way what my creature comforts are and what I’m willing to sacrifice for an adorable abode.  Do you need a dishwasher; do you enjoy living by yourself; do you need covered parking, do you have easy access to multiple freeway systems; do you absolutely have to have a pool?  These are just a few of the things you should figure out pre-move, so you don’t spend the entire lease complaining about the have-nots instead of celebrating the awesome amenities.

Spring Cleaning isn’t just for Spring

Beyond where you’re going – you should also be aware of where you’re coming from and the baggage you’ll be bringing with you.  Speaking of what you’re bringing with you, this is an excellent time to pair down what you already possess – do you need four surfboards?  Some would argue yes – but not everyone.  I wouldn’t necessarily call myself a ‘pack rat‘ but then again, I don’t know anyone that would volunteer themselves as a hoarder; maybe I’m a little hypersensitive because my step mom was a professional organizer…or there’s the fact my room was so messy that she wouldn’t let the house cleaners touch it!  At the time, I thought her thinking was backwards but the wiser I become with age, the more I see her point: cleaning your apartment is not the same as putting things in their place.

Check Yourself, and Your Inventory

What I’ve discovered is that my step-mother is incredibly wise and on point, so I’ve adopted one of her most basic rules: a place for every thing, and everything in its place.  If you’re suddenly discovering that you have an overabundance of plates + knives but no cups or forks, you’ll find yourself in the middle of an incredibly awkward space planning issue at the most inopportune times – date nights, pre-partying, etc – you get the idea.   Take inventory of what you have and take notice of what you’re missing – if you do a little digging on Yelp, I bet you’ll even find some inexpensive and funky ways to upgrade your household inventory.  The Melrose Trading Post in the Fairfax District runs every Sunday, rain or shine, and always delivers the best in antique and unique household items, clothing and jewelry.  If you’re a little to the East, the Rose Bowl Flea Market is open the second Sunday of every month – I’ve never been but I’ve heard that it’s a fabulous way to lose yourself on a beautiful afternoon.  Another great resource are restaurant supply stores – you can buy quality kitchenware at beyond affordable prices.

Closet Math – Less is More

For being an intuitive math person, it took me an awful long time to discover that closet math is incredibly different from normal math.  You’d think that more is…well, more!  But  take into consideration how often you run into something torn, faded, a little on the small side (or large side, pick whatever koolaid you’ve been sippin’ on), or you’d simply like to slap the you from two years ago who thought that pattern actually looked good – every time you notice those pieces of clothing, you’re been deterred from that good shit!  Often, and especially for myself, I’m gifted with clothing and accessories from my closest confidants and feel guilty holding onto it.  Then I have to think about it this way –  if it’s not going to good use (and it’s not from immediate family), gift it and pay it forward; I promise it’ll be well received.  If you’re not into gifting – hold a yard sale, or walk a bag or ten over to your local goodwill.

Next time you get ready, take a good hard look at your wardrobe – some of it’s seasonal, so you can rotate it between your main closet and a hall closet or storage;  on the other hand, some of it might require you to go through some form of separation anxiety.  Either way you play the game, you’ll open up space and be able to see things much more easily; not only can you get ready in a flash but just watch as your make some new, expert outfit pairings.

Making Moves

Here we have the under-appreciated  art of apartment hunting.  Instead of focusing on what I might’ve definitely wrong, I’d like to share a couple things that have gone right for me.  Moving itself is primarily about one thing and one thing only: location, location, location.   In a major city, especially one as big as Los Angeles, it’s important to understand what you’re near – and what’s absolutely  BFE away from – you.  I found a phenomenal website – and iPhone app – called Lovely and it’s by far the best apartment hunting website around.

Do you value your time, or do you value the money you’re investing?  Granted, you can move in a year…but that could be a very long year.  Being near a freeway is important and considering how congested traffic is, being near a bunch is better.  Everyone loves being able to walk to the beach but not everyone can afford the cost(…for now).  So take the time and think about the things you’re willing to give up and what you need to live in comfort. Some places have covered parking, some have parking garages – and some people drive for twenty minutes every night.  If you’re into fitness and walking like I am, you might want to know what’s close by and convenient so head over to Walk Score and see how “walkable” your new (or current) neighborhood is; you might be surprised at the results.

Listomania

Last but definitely not least  is the power of lists.  I’m a special breed – I have lists of lists, and lists everywhere: old school written post-its, text messages to myself and a great app for all my devices called Evernote.  It lets me take my lists digitally wherever I go and it’s perfect for anything like packing lists, recipes, bucket lists and – you guessed it, apartment criteria.  This way, you literally can’t avoid jotting down your thoughts on the kitchen in your coworker’s new pad and how badly you wish you could walk to a farmer’s market every Sunday.

Doing it Right: San Diego’s Museum of Natural History

Most people develop their New Years Resolutions by the time January rolls around; then they’re on top of them, up and at’em and crossing things off their lists.  I have a less manicured, equally pragmatic approach to resolutions – whereas mine typically come to me as the year rolls on.  So far this year, we have not buying packs of cigarettes, walking to the gym instead of driving and now I have another to add to the list: I want to go to one new museum a month!  Last month, I adventured out to the Getty Villa in Malibu to soak up some gorgeous rays and it set a wonderful tone for the day.  I was surrounded by wonderful company and timeless works of art; and I wanted more!  So, while I was down in San Diego last weekend my friends and I stopped by Balboa Park to take in the cacophony of museums. We finally settled on the Museum of Natural History – and it was a good call…between their Chocolate Exhibit and an Ansel Adams-esque Photography expose, we definitely got our fill of culture for the day.

Gorgeous, Southern California weather…

Gorgeous flowers from the Botanical Garden

…more of the garden…

Sunshine peaking through the leaves

Chocolate!! How could we resist?!

That’s a whole lotta chocolate!

If only these were real! Omnom…

Sharks and dolphins!

Pelican! And other birds

I love that the lion skull makes a heart =)

The end of our adventure; until the next one!

Doing it Right: Crystal Bridges Museum of Art

One of the highlights of my trip to Arkansas was visiting the fabulous Crystal Bridges Museum of Art.  According to my coworkers in Arkansas, there was an uproar in the art community when the facility was built – housing works from Pollock, Lichtenstein, Warhol and Rockwell, many people from dense metropolitan areas were up in arms that a small town in the south would be graced with these wonderful collections.  I think that’s absolutely ridiculous!  I don’t think there is a single person that doesn’t appreciate art and culture within their own scope, and to think it’s appropriate to deny these works to any part of our population is insane.  Before my trip, I didn’t have a rhyme or reason to want to be in the south –  but between the hospitality and warmth of the people, the beauty of the silence and the seasons, the effing amazing food and the art and culture, I wouldn’t mind going back!

These are some of the highlights from my trip to Crystal Bridges, I hope you enjoy them as much as I did!

Quotable: The Measure of Success

image

“Success: To laugh often and much, to win the respect of intelligent people and the affection of children, to appreciate beauty, to find the best in others, to leave the world a bit better, whether by a healthy child, a garden patch, or a redeemed social condition, to know even one life has breathed easier because you have lived. This is to have succeeded.”

– Ralph Waldo Emerson

Travellin’ Tales: You Say Goodbye, I Say Hello

Why is it that the first 24 hours of a trip seem to span a week, but by the end you’re wondering where the hell all that time went?  That’s the conundrum that I’m in right now – I flew into Fayetteville late Monday night, and here I am Thursday morning packing again to head back to California.  What a whirlwind adventure this has been….

I keep thinking back to my expectations of  coming to Arkansas – what I thought I would experience, the people assumed I would meet, what the culture here had to offer me; and I’m proud to report I’ve been blown away.  The people are beyond welcoming and my interactions here have been nothing but delightfully pleasant.  I spend most of my day surrounded by a mess of movie sleeves, price points and amarays and my job is to organize and make sense of it all. Fortunately for me, I have some kickass tunes and rad headphones to get me through the day. If a few years ago someone told my family I would be in charge of organization of this magnitude, I’m sure you would’ve gotten some hearty laughs and eye-rolls from them.  But here I am, growing up and growing into myself – and I’ve proven day in and day out that I can deliver, in a big way.

And it’s not just Disney people that I’ve gotten to know while I’m down here – there are Sales people I’ve made friends with from Lionsgate, Universal, Warner and Phase 4 media; I’ve gotten to sit in with my team and the Executive Director of 20th Century Fox while he explained what goes into forecasting day one sales for a movie.  What’s more, is that with each step he explained to my teammates I would turn the conversation around and engage him in the math and statistics of his explanation.  A lot of it is about the normalization data, relative means and distributions – I didn’t realize until I got here just how much I love numbers.  About half an hour after we left his office, he came back to the main room and in front of everyone said the following:  I spend most of my day turning the math and statistics into something a normal person could understand, thank you for coming back in here and smartening me back up.  Me? Smartening up an Exec Director?! Ah!

“I’m Gonna Wreck It!”

Work stuff aside, I’ve had a few moments here and there to enjoy and explore this adorably quaint town.  First of all, it reminds me so much of Corvallis, Oregon it’s unreal.  There are expansive properties, friendly people walking everywhere and brisk – but comfortable – weather.  The first full day I was here we went and ate at a local spot called Jimmy John’s, which is full of delish sandwiches. I got (predictably) the “Californian” and it was phenomenal.  Later that night my coworker and I stopped by a local movie theater and I finally saw ‘Wreck it Ralph‘ – if you haven’t seen it, do it now; if you didn’t like it – let me know and I’ll go ahead and delete you from my life.  Really though, I don’t understand how someone couldn’t like it! And the little Skrillex cameo at the beginning? Bonkers adorable; really though!  That night when I got back, I somehow had the energy to kick my ass at the hotel’s amazing gym; great idea to get my body on Central time!

Kobe Sushi

Wednesday was more of the same – sleeves, amarays, price points, oh my…; for lunch, the sales manager treated us to some gas station sushi.  I know it sounds sketchy, hell – when my Exec Directors back in Burbank told me about it I was hesitant to even try. I mean, sushi – in Arkansas?! Yes!  The place reminded me of a hole in the wall restaurant in Los Angeles, and was run by a very sweet family.  Apparently, if you go often enough they’ll give you a pair of chopsticks that you get to use whenever you return – absolutely genius.  Of course, when I posted the picture to Facebook one of the immediate responses I got was “GAS IS SO CHEAP THERE!”, yeah – Arkansas has that going on, too.

Last, but most certainly not least – after work was out last night, I got the opportunity to go to Crystal Bridges Museum and see some of the art and culture of the city.  First of all, holy hell – the architecture of the museum is out of this world.  So out of this world, in fact, that there’s a section of the museum currently devoted to their architect – Moshe Safdie.  He’s built other amazing structures like Habitat 67 in Montreal, which kickstarted his career, as well as the Skirball cultural center in Los Angeles, the Eleanor Roosevelt library at UCSD and the Holocaust History Museum in Jerusalem. The other exhibit that I fell in love with was “See the Light” – I loved the color, contrast, illumination and shadow play.   Once I upload pictures I’ll be able to show you guys just how amazing the art was, but some other highlights of the museum were pieces by Jackson Pollock, Roy Lichtenstein and last but definitely not least – Mister Andy Warhol.
