Music Monday: BLOND:ISH – The Perfect Frequency

By just browsing through my recent music postings on the blog, my Facebook and through Twitter – I can tell that this Deep House kick I’ve been on is much, much more than just a seasonal shift in the headphones.  This new found…dare I say “relationship” with the deeper, darker side of House Music started at the beginning of 2012.  I’ve toyed around with various DJs and Producers, trying to find where exactly in the genre I fit – and finally, after a lot of soul searching and bass pounding, I think I figured it out.

The great thing about being friends with so many people in the music industry is that they continually give me fresh new DJs and music to get into. Record Labels like Get Physical – which boasts phenomenal artists like Heidi, Catz n Dogz, Audiofly and Damian Lazarus, Noir and Kompakt; DJs like Climbers, Maya Jane Coles, Infinity Ink, Claude VonStroke, Russ Yallop, Maxxi Soundsystem.  These guys are what gets my feet movin’ and groovin’; what moves my body, mind and soul as one.  It’s like the perfect hat trick.

A few weeks ago I was on a huge Finnebassen and Climbers kick – as I searched through videos and soundcloud posts, I discovered a sexy little group called Blond:ish that I just can’t get enough of.

Originally hailing from Canada, the fiesty and fun duo of Vivie-Ann and Anstacia have made their mark on the industry with their delicious sounds, sultry vocals and A+ attitude on the decks.  Just take a listen to their collaborations with the ever soulful Climbers, or their mixtapes from the Robot Heart bus at Burning Man and I bet you’ll love them just as much as I do.

It’s just my luck that they’ll be playing down in Orange County on 1/22 at FOCUS, which is held at the adorable Tapas of Orange County every Tuesday.  I’ll definitely be in attendance; y’all should as well!

Music Monday: We Go Deep

Could you imagine if your whole week was essentially made of out Mondays?! That sounds like one of Dante’s seven layers of hell to me! The one great about Mondays – when they’re over, they’re over! The unfortunate part of this is that it’s not quite over for us West Coast-Best Coast’ers.  But conveniently – we have a few more hours to go until that 5 o’clock happy hour starts and I have a few hours of my favorite sultry and savory deep house tracks to share.

I hope they’re as good for y’all as they are for me; enjoy!

Mellow Monday: Finnebassen

This past summer was probably one of the, if not the busiest I’ve had in 27 years of existence. Sure, as a child my time would fill up with camps, sports and sleepovers – but those were all ridiculously fun endeavors that I simply didn’t have to pay for out of my own.  The older and more mature I become, the more I realize that absolutely nothing from childhood can compare to the harmony any of us have to sustain in our adult lives.

Weeks are spent negotiating an 8-to-5 job, gym sessions, and extended family dinners; the better part of the weekend is spent finding an equilibrium between the dance floor and downtime. Well, this summer I spent a lot of momentum bouncing from rooftop, warehouse and boat parties all around the great city of Los Angeles.  Maybe it’s the fact I finally did my financials, or it could be the shift to Autumn weather – and by Autumn I mean that the temperature in LA is below 90 for now – perfect for catching some Indian Summer sun by the pool and devouring a great read – but lately I’ve shifted from ballin’ on a budget, so to speak, to kicking back with a good soundtrack, some drinks and my close friends.

One of our favorite pastimes is sharing music – which is convenient because we all have an immense love for music and  overlapping, phenomenal tastes.  One of the up and coming artists we’re all enthralled with is Finnebassen from Norway.   What hooked me on his music were  the R&B vocals delicately layered over his deep house beats, which is perfect for floating through the day to 5 o’clock.

Sunday Soundcheck

I’ve spent some quality time with my cats and my music this weekend; it’s been both nice and necessary. If you have air conditioning in your apartment (and it works) consider yourself very lucky right now! This weather has been ridiculous lately – maybe upper 90s for the past few weeks at the very least. Which is fine and dandy during the weekends, but during the week it’s just cruel and unusual punishment to have the beach so close yet so far.

Basically every day I dream about sitting near some calming body of water with some great friends and good music. Well, I’ve accomplished half the battle; enjoy this hour long playlist of some of my favorite mid-summer, sunny Sunday sounds!

Music Monday: Choose Your Own Adventure

Ah, yes – I’m one of those strange, strange people who actually enjoys that first day of the work week.

First, it only happens once a week which is so lovely – I think if we had more of them I might suddenly understand where the rest of you are coming from.

Secondly, that feeling 5 o’clock feeling when the day is done and under your belt; there’s no better day to appreciate that than a Monday.

I usually spend part of my day reminiscing about the good fun I’ve had over the weekend: editing and posting pictures, reaching out to new friends, and tracking down any tonal treasures that got stuck in my head over the weekend.

I’m not sure who came up with the idea that Monday‘s always had to be manic – or that a little mania on Monday was a bad thing;I had an incredibly relaxing weekend (all things considered, being me and all…) and I’m feeling pretty mellow at the moment. But regardless of where your weekend dropped you off, I have some jams, new and old, to pick you up and chill you out.  Each playlist is about half an hour, so why don’t you treat yourself to some fun on your lunch break and take a listen?  After all, it is a Monday – you deserve it!

This one is for the gogetters and anyone looking to pick it up a notch or rock it out:

  1. Dog Blood – Next Order

  5. Zedd ft. Matthew Koma – Spectrum (A-Trak + Clockwork Remix)
  6. Gareth Emery – Tokyo (Pixel Cheese Remix)

And for everyone else – maybe your hangover is too loud today, or you and the snooze button just became best friends this morning; either way, I’m sure you’d love to pull a Grandma’s Boy and take a nap under your desk.  In lieu of doing that, and potentially getting fired – why not listen to this mix and try and make it through the day.

  2. Jessie Ware – Running (Disclosure Remix)
  3. Blackmill – Miracle
  4. Sunlounger ft Zara Taylor – Found (Downtempo Edit)
