[The Audiofiles] A Funk Soul Revival with The Opiuo Band at the El Rey on 6/26

Thanks to the accessibility of technology and the combined outpouring of new talent, the music industry is constantly propelling itself forward while attempting to remain true to it’s natural roots.  Within the first half of this decade, I’ve seen a complete resurgence of live instrumentation alongside electronic productions.  Across the genres and between artists like EOTO to Chase and Status, Pretty Lights to Russ Liquid and Late Night Radio, Griz and Gramatik – there are hints of jazz and slam poetry; the livetronica movement is gaining momentum and jam bands are no longer a thing of the past. There is a strong squad of current producers that are as progressive as they are regressive; combining the modern want of whomp and bass coursing through our veins like electricity, while our minds warp around succulent synths, harmonic chord progressions and ethereal melodies.

Starting with Sea of Dreams and the Gem and Jam Festival, I’ve been blessed to be front and center from phenomenal live performances this year; so going into Lightning in a Bottle, my hopes were sky high that I’d get my mind blown as I went on a five day, extrasensory adventure. Boy, was I ever right! I’d only listened to Opiuo a handful of times before LIB, but each time – their energetic, pulsing rhythm, sultry vocals and whimsical melodies wafted through my world with delirious tones and I kept wanting more.  I was finally getting to witness their genius live, and with a live band? Day made and they did not disappoint.

Part funk, part soul, and all the way groovy, Opiou makes the beats that makes everyone want to move their feet; his music defies generation gaps and you could easily pin him for twenty years too early for his time, or twenty years to late, but I’d like to think of him as right on time.  Hailing from New Zealand, Opiuo is the definition of musical genius. Since LIB, I’ve no kidding put probably 200 plays on this Soundcloud playlist they put together for Montreal’s Frank & Oak; if this can’t get you in the mood – nothing will!

On Friday, June 26 The Opiuo Band will get the El Rey Theatre movin’ and groovin’ with their delectable wobbles and body moving melodies.  Doors open at 8pm, let the good vibes roll!  If you can’t make the LA date, don’t fret – they’ll be cruising through the United States until then.

[The Audiofiles] /ˈlo͞osid/ Puts a Delirious Spin on Galantis’ ‘Gold Dust’

loosid

The already ephemeral ‘Gold Dust’ from EDM power duo Galantis has been receiving the remix treatment across the board. Once again, Linus Eklöw – better known to fans as Style of Eye – and Christian Karlsson of Miike Snow fame have crafted an effervescent mix of feel good, four to the floor rhythm with hauntingly beautiful vocals. Artists ranging from Hook N Sling and CRNKN with Hotel Garuda have had their way with the Original mix, and now, it’s time for /ˈlo͞osid/ to mix in his magic.

An enigmatic producer who elegantly juxtaposes multiple genres within just one song, /ˈlo͞osid/ has forged his way onto the dance music circuit with an impressive catalog of remixes and original tracks. From John Mayer’s ‘Falling’ to Evanescene’s ‘Going Under’, I’ve been both catapulted back to childhood and ahead into the future of bass music while ‘Chaos’ and ‘Dim the Lights’ still hail as two of my favorite original productions from 2015.Now, with his latest remix of ‘Gold Dust’, he’s both raised the BPM and my interest; weaving bass heavy synths into crunchy melodies, unpredictable and euphoric breakdowns.

Mark my words, this is an artist to keep on your radar. For more on /ˈlo͞osid/, keep track of his socials –

[The Audiofiles] Blast off on an Interstellar Adventure with Michal Menert’s “Space Jazz”

space jazz

After witnessing the Michal Menert Trio Live this past February at Arizona’s fabled Gem and Jam Festival, I’ve been eagerly awaiting “Space Jazz” so I’m personally pleased to announce that Menert’s latest album is finally here! With a background firmly rooted in both hip-hop and soul, Michal Menert continually pushes the boundaries of modern artistry to create conscious music that you can groove to. Released on 4/21, the 15 track LP fuses the passionate pursuit of musical creation with cross genre collaboration with a menagerie of talented artists like Marcelo Moxy, JK Soul, C1 and Paul Basic – the other half of the duo Half Color with Menert.

“I wanted to make an album that you can lose yourself in, with subtle details throughout and a narrative dictated by feelings so that the listener is taken on a journey guided by the vibes from one track to the next. The end result is one of my proudest offerings, and the most cohesive work I’ve every released.” – Michal Menert

You can stream the whole album now on Soundcloud, or head to the following sources to purchase the album:

[The Audiofiles] Embracing Individuality within the Dance Music Community

Still on a wonderful life buzz after Coachella, and as much as I want to delve into a festival recap and expound upon the amazing time I had last weekend, I need to take care of something else first.  The more I look into articles that should dive and swim into the wonderful shenanigans, magic and music over the weekend – the more I uncover unnecessary snark and all around rudeness. For as many articles exist chronicling last weekends adventures, I’ve found just as many bashing the daring, individual fashion choices of the weekend and it quite literally makes me sick (except for that one guy….which is a different discussion all together). When “reputable” places like Billboard and Telegraph decide to not just openly discuss and demean people who are having a time and beating to their own drum, but make it a public display for the world to add their negative commentary to, you really have to rethink who runs them, what their goals are as an outlet and if we should even care what they have to say. Not to discount the fact that we as Southern Californians truly live in a mecca of manifestation; our sense of fashion is perpetually on display to be eaten up like hotcakes by the remainder of the country.  But, the simple fact of the matter is that the dance music scene was borne out of people looking for a place to freely express themselves, to openly be and become the people that we want to be. Whether that means we don fairy wings, a psychedelic top, matching onesies or obscure makeup shouldn’t bother the next person because it’s a symbol of our bold push towards individuality. And at the end of the day, it’s the dance music circuit; the pulsing rhythm replicating our heart beat, the crowd pulsing together to make us feel like we’re part of some giant, living, loving breathing organism – because we are.  The EDM community has the power to quite literally save lives – so why are we giving people shit for living theirs the way they want? Our entire life, we’ve been shoved into cookie cutter boxes and labels and have pushed back, sometimes passively and other times through this wonderful community that we’ve passionately pursued.  The majority of us have been bullied in some way shape or form, so the fact that an outsider feels the need to encroach and express disdain over the creative expressions of humanity over the weekend simply doesn’t get the point of our scene.  For three days and nights, I witnessed nothing but smiling faces and beautiful people – embracing each other and the music in kind. I wish I could’ve hugged each and every one of them; for being bold, for being unique, for being beautiful – for their unequivocal, undeniable, honest and beautiful displays of humanity. We choose to create the reality we live in; and as writers, doubly so. If you don’t have anything nice to say, maybe shut your mouth and find a new profession.

[The Audiofiles] Funky Beats for a Funky Mood

Originally, when I was getting ready for today’s post I had nothing but House, Techno, Love and Desert Hearts on the mind; if you’re not familiar with the group, trust me when I say over the next few years you’ll be hearing this name more and more frequently.  A band of merry music makers and rump shakers from in and around San Diego, the Desert Hearts tribe is more than just a community of conscious music lovers – they embrace the yearning, creative fire that burns inside all of us and manifest it into a whirlwind of a weekend.  From Friday morning through Monday morning, I’ll be grooving and moving to 72 straight hours of House Music.  If you think of EDC like a race, and Lightning in a Bottle was a marathon – ths might just take the title of Hippie Olympics in my book (sorry, LIB – it was good while it lasted!).  Plus, don’t get me started on the time, energy, love and passion it takes to last a week in the Desert for Burning Man – especially since I’ve yet to experience my own Playa Magic!

But, apparently – life had other plans for me. In the last 24 hours, I’ve dealt with and processed more emotions than I care to know about or share.  It should’t seem so convoluted that the world can turn on top of itself in the same amount of time it takes to breathe, blink and iterate a heartbeat – but at the end of the day, it still is.  I’m aware that we can only conquer or emotions if we make a conscious choice to control them, and doubly so that the people in our lives can give us expectation hangovers.   On a personal level, I absolutely am enthralled by people who are passionately, unequivocally, unapologetically themselves – almost to a fault.  I love the humanity it in, however flawed it potentially could be.  But somehow, all of a sudden – because I’ve never installed rules, guidelines or boundaries – it all backfires. You know, those fast friends where you invariably said some familial form of ‘I Love You’ much too soon without getting to actually know them; the people that you accept at 110%, but then refuse to give more than 25%.You don’t adopt a dog expecting it to meow, and you certainly don’t acquire friendships for the flippant sake of social guise.  The friends that I keep close to my soul are the ones that love me for the person I’ve become and constantly challenge me to be the best version of myself.  At moments of stagnation, of static movement – we’re not just standing still but we’re moving backwards; especially in a world where we have to run so fast just to stay in place.

‘When words fail, music speaks’ so I’m going to shut up and let these songs take it from here.  My heart hangs heavy, but my eyes are hopefully and my mind is open.

[The Audiofiles] Rain Man Sets Solo Career Ablaze with Debut Track ‘Visionary’ Featuring Sirah

rainman

After setting the internet ablaze last year after leaving the talented dupstep triumvirate of Krewella, we’ve all been (im)patiently for Rain Man to come through with a solo career. The brains behind the bass and the passionate producer of the bunch, Rain Man more than made a name for himself behind the decks of Krewella and now he’s stepping out into his own spotlight. On March 29th, he’ll be kicking off a series of solo shows in Miami and now he’s rousing interest and ruffling feathers with his first single – ‘Visionary’, featuring Sirah of Skrillex and Alvin Risk fame.

Out today on Buygore Records, “Visionary” is the track we’ve wanted for the last year and simply haven’t gotten. Between the booming bass and seductive vocals, it’s easy to forget you’re not listening to a Krewella track; flip your script and remember who crafted those crushing beats and you’ll be singing a different tune. The track comes to life with the rumble of a Reggae infused Dubstep track, with delicately layered lyrics over crushing basslines – perfect for all hours at your favorite dance hall.

“The lyrics for visionary are super dark. Basically I’m talking about the decision every artist needs to make, where you either stay true to what you believe in or you bend your art to fit in a lane. I make my own lane,” – Sirah

Rain Man kicks off his solo tour in Miami at the Buygore Pool Party on 3/29, with stops in Chicago, New York’s Webster Hall and Avalon in Los Angeles on 4/17.
