[The Audiofiles] Chet Faker: From Drop the Game to Dropping the Name

Known as the crooning sensation that seemingly drops as many falsettos as panties, the voice of many features and collaborations with Flume including the ‘Lockjaw’ EP and ‘Drop the Game’ – plus the brainchild behind albums like ‘Built on Glass’ and ‘Work’ and – Chet Faker – is now working under a new pseudonym: Nick Murphy. Who’s name is that you ask? Well, for starters – it’s his given name. That’s right, after five years of immeasurable success as Chet Faker, Nick is ready to shed that snake skin and come back into the music circuit renewed, rejuvenated and ready. The announcement came through both Facebook and Twitter last night.

For now, his social media channels have slowly taken to the currents of change – his profile and cover photo from Facebook have gone dark, his given name on Twitter has officially been switched to Nick Murphy while the Twitter handle has stayed, and his Soundcloud offers a nod to the name change as well. Music fans, let’s face it: no matter what name he works under – Chet Faker, Nick Murphy, Santa Clause, The Cat in the Hat – with his raw, emotive tone, moving lyrics and delectable delivery, he could sing me the alphabet and it would sound like gold. Keep on keepin’ on, Nick – we can’t wait to see where your musical prowess takes you next.

[The Audiofiles] Feast Your Ears & Eye’s on Flume’s Latest World Tour

This coming weekend, Australian dance music phenom and Future Music pioneer Flume is on a mission to light up Los Angeles with not just one, or two performances – but four incredible nights of music and magic at the fabled Shrine Expo Hall. The delectable and delicate tones paired with ethereal vocalists and seductive basslines on Flume’s second album ‘Skin’ have reinvigorated his fanbase tenfold and left us all eagerly waiting for more, existing as an audiovisual masterpiece that should be both seen and heard.

Now that the album has had a chance to marinate in the ears of fans around the globe, it’s only right that Flume depart on a World Tour to bring the ‘Skin’ experience front and center. The North American leg of the World Tour began Seattle, then bounced out to our neighbors in the far North in Vancouver – and finally, this week – Flume lands in Los Angeles, and our city is ready for liftoff. [Track of the Week] Flume x Hermitude – Hyperparadise (GANZ Flip)

One of my life mottoes is ‘Never a Dull Moment‘, and this definitely translates over to my taste in music. There’s nothing I detest more than the hum-drum boredom that comes hand in hand repetition, simplicity and redundancy across a song, album or a career and because of this – I’ve single-handedly ruined songs for myself by overplaying them in an incredibly short amount of time. I feel the pull of non-Western scales and non-Traditional forms of music like Tipper, Culprate and Shpongle; in moderation, I even find dissonance comforting. As with everything else in my world, layers of complexity compel me to discover about a person – and doubly so for an artist.

When I discovered Flume a few months back, the depths of his talent still escaped me – but now, I find myself impatiently waiting to see new tricks this 22 year old phenom from Australia has in store for the world. Between his bewitching, glitch infused electronic basslines, poignant lyricists and downtempo soundscapes, Flume continually pushes boundaries blurs the lines between musical genres to create what I think of as Future Music, and sits plush in the middle of a Venn Diagram with Griz and Gramatik on one side and Emancipator and Bonobo on the other. Last year, there were two huge releases from Flume – his self titled, debut album as well as the ‘Drop the Game’ EP with Chet Faker. And thanks to Hypem, I’m finding unreleased mixes hidden deep in the interwebs from back in 2012 that I’m simply falling head over heals with.

The original version of ‘Hyperparadise’ is from Hermitude, an Australian group with roots in both hip-hop and electronica, and came out back in ’12.

Between the tropical sound of the steel drums, a wobbling deep house bass line and seductive breakdown – it’s easy to see why Flume chose this track to chop up and break down in a way only he knows how.

Finally, GANZ got his little fingers on the single during a remix competition and crafted what I firmly believe is one of the best songs of the past year. His rework of Flume’s remix embellishes all the glitches I love, and infuses it with a trip-hop sound meant for bumping at loud volumes.

When it comes to discovering new music, I’ll get inspiration from anywhere and everywhere possible – if you’ve been tagging along on the Bouncy Kitty for a while, you’ve born witness to my effervescent prowl for the latest and greatest tunes. And here’s the thing, I can get into a lot of music. At it’s most basic level – music is catchy. I love rocking to the beat so if it moves me physically – I’ll find a way to mentally get into it. However, I can get over a song as easily as I can get into one; if I don’t find it to be musically complex, progressive or innovative – my interest dies exceptionally fast. I habitually surf social sites to get my jams; but, if there’s something I trust more than a socially verified banger, it’s a solid recommendation straight from the mouth of babes (and by babes, I mean my wonderful extended family in LA.) One of my closest friends just happens to be my boyfriend’s housemate, and believe you me – I spend a hefty amount of time over in their neck of the woods.

Morning, afternoon, evening – the man is always garnering musical inspiration from a whole host of sources and he’s always imparting his musical knowledge on us. One of his latest finds is Australian born and bred producer Flume, and needless to say – I’m hooked. The Deluxe Edition of his latest album hits worldwide today, but unfortunately for us kids in the states we have to wait until the 12th to snag our copy from iTunes.

Over the past few weeks, I’ve been listening to Flume’s on Soundcloud feed non-freaking-stop; each song is so uniquely complex and layered that you can’t possibly process it in one, two or even three listens. And then, after the tenth or twentieth – you’re left wondering how you never heard those top notes before, or how the bassline rumbles your soul. Forget about genres and fitting artists into neatly packaged little boxes, Flume is one of those artists that simply produces great music. He combines downtempo electronic music with powerful lyrics and a a diverse group of vocalists like Ghostface Killa, Isabella Manfredi, Stalley,Moon Holiday and Chet Faker. No two tracks on the album sound alike, and there are a handful that I’ve had in heavy rotation. It’s hard to pick a favorite, but right now I’d have to say it’s between the feel good rap ballad ‘On Top’ with lyrics from T-Shirt, ‘Left Alone’ with Chet Faker – an indie-electro artist from Australia ‘Holding On’ featuring the soulful voice of Freddie Gibbs, a rapper formerly on Young Jeezy’s label CTE. The best thing about Flume’s music is that it can speak for itself,so I’ll let it do the talking; enjoy!
